RUSSIAN LINE INFANTRY STANDARDS

Between 1805 and 1815 the Model 1803 Standard was the one most commonly used by line infantry regiments.  Each regiment was issued six standards, one of the white pattern and five of the colored pattern.  The 1st Battalion of the regiment had one white and one colored,  and the other two battalions having two colored standards each.

Note: While the "white" standards in these images may show a line at the meeting point of the cross and corners. In reality the standards were sewn together in sections and on an actual  "white standard" the joint lines of white colored sections would be essentially invisible at any appreciable distance.

1803 Colored Standard (Orenburg Inspection)

All standards had the central round orange disk with the Romanov two headed eagle in black with gold crowns, beaks and claws. The eagles hold a package of thunderbolts and gold lightning streaks. The disk is surrounded by a gold wreath, topped by a gold crown and tied at the bottom with a gold ribbon. There are smaller wreaths, crowns, and the Cyrillic cypher for "A" (for Alexander) all in gold in each of the four corners. The white standards cross was all white, while the cross on the colored standard was in most cases colored for the Inspection (region) from which the regiment was raised.

A variation encountered was the 1806  or "St. George Standard" which was essentially the 1803 with  inscriptions around the borders in gold for specific gallantry, and a St. George Cross on the spearhead  of the staff instead of the imperial eagle.  The first 1806 issued to any unit, the Kiev Grenadier regiment, which consisted of six white standards, also had an image of St. George in a red oval in the center chest of the double headed Romanov eagle. Reportedly this was the only issue so decorated.  All remaining St. George standards are said to have lacked the St. George image.

After 1808 the system of organization by Inspection was abolished and a Divisional system was instituted.  New battalions were raised. Some were transferred from one regiment to others as the new Divisions were fleshed out. Many were either issued new standards, usually Model 1803's, or kept the standards from their old regiments and inspections.

Additionally many regiments received distinctively colored standards for conspicuous gallantry of either the 1803 or 1806 St. George patterns with their deeds embroidered around the circumference of the flag inside the four arms of the main cross.

Three divisions of the army also had distinctive colors for their "colored" standards, these were the 16th, 17th and 18th divisions.  These divisions "white" standards were identical with all other white standards.

Finally, many new regiments were formed from battalions of existing regiments at one time or another and kept the standards from their old regiments rather than be issued new standards.  So to add to the confusion, a new regiments battalions could have colored standards of three different colors! Known regiments with such mixes are:
  1. Voronezh Infantry Regiment - one each from Viborg, Fridriechgan, and Neshlot
  2. Briansk  Infantry Regiment - two from Alandsk,  one from Ganguet.
  3. Lithuania Musketeer Regiment- Three from Sveabersk
